40 arrests made in June for begging activity in Cork

Up to fifteen people are believed to be begging as part of an organised begging operation on the streets of Cork city.

The group, who are believed to have been flown in from Romania, are suspected to have outside help, with duvets being removed during the day and transported in vans.

It comes as Gardaí in Cork have confirmed that forty arrests for begging were made in Cork during the month of June.

Under current legislation, begging is only an offence if the individuals involved are causing an obstruction, and is punishable by a fine of up to €500.
