Almost 3000 fathers across Cork claim Paternity Benefit within first year since its introduction
Cork had the highest number of claims for the benefit when it was first introduced in September 2016
Over 600 claims were awarded to Cork fathers in September, this was followed by Dublin who had the second highest number of claims.
The Evening Echo reports - claims Leeside almost halved by July this year with just 346 awarded.
It's believed financial issues are a primary factor in fathers avoiding the scheme however new fathers are being urged to avail of the benefit of €235 per week over a two week period.
Employed and self employed fathers who meet specific PRSI contributions can avail of the benefit up to 26 weeks after the child's birth or adoption and is also available to same sex couples.
