Amnesty Ireland: G7's Pledge To Donate 1 Billion Covid Vaccine Doses To Poorer Countries Is "Drop In The Ocean"
Today will see world leaders commit to a new plan to prevent a repeat of the pandemic
There's concern inadequate progress on vaccination in developing nations is putting global recovery at risk.
Over 2.2 billion vaccine doses have been administered worldwide, and around 560 million of those have been given in G7 countries alone.
Executive Director of Amnesty Ireland, Colm O'Gorman, says the level of inequity is staggering:
"More people have been vaccinated in the county of Cornwall in the UK where this meeting is taking place this weekend, than have been in 22 African countries. By the end of May of this year 42% of people in G7 countries, the countries represented in this meeting, had received at least one vaccine dose, and that compares to less than 1% in low income countries."
