Changed To Fair Deal Scheme Could Solve Housing Crisis Leeside
Cork's Homeless Crisis could be solved if changes to the Fair Deal scheme are introduced immediately.
That's according to Cork Councillor Thomas Gould who says hundreds of people who are currently homeless or living in emergency accommodation across the city and county could be rehomed, if these changes were implemented.
Housing Minister Eoghan Murphy has announced a measure to encourage elderly people living in nursing homes to rent out their property, however given the way the Fair Deal Scheme currently works, believes this could prove difficult to implement.
Under the Fair Deal scheme people who need long term residential care services make a contribution towards the cost of their care and the State pays the balance.
However 80% of the patients assessable income go to the state as well as 7.5% of the value of their home per year.
Speaking to RedFM News Councillor Thomas Gould says those in nursing homes are reluctant to hand over their homes for rental purposes:
