Colourful language used in Disclosures Tribunal

The former Garda Commissioner twice referred to Maurice McCabe as a kiddie-fiddler and a child abuser, the Disclosures Tribunal has heard.

Former Chairman of the Public Accounts Committee John McGuinness has been giving evidence about Sergeant McCabe’s and Martin Callinan’s dealings with him and the PAC in 2013 and 2014.

Deputy McGuinness says Martin Callinan referred to Maurice McCabe as a kiddie fiddler after his appearance at the PAC when he referred to the actions of whistleblowers as disgusting.

He says the Commissioner repeated the allegation at a meeting in a hotel car park the following day when he said Maurice McCabe was not to be trusted.

The Tribunal also heard details of a statement by former Commissioner Callinan who says he only raised data protection concerns at that meeting, and that it was Deputy McGuinness who questioned Maurice McCabe’s motivation.
