Cork Simon says elderly people should not feel compelled to give up their homes
It's in response to the Government's proposal for elderly homeowners in nursing homes or hospitals to consider renting their homes in a bid to tackle the housing shortage
However Cork Simon say relying on elderly people to solve the homeless crisis is not a viable option until all the details of the plan are released.
The Minister for Housing Eoghan Murphy plans to discuss the terms of the Fair Deal Nursing Home Support Scheme with the Department of Health to see if the terms can be changed to allow the use of vacant properties.
However the exact details of the proposed measure will not be revealed until the Vacant Homes Strategy is published in September.
Speaking to RedFM News Paul Sheehan from Cork Simon says the measure needs careful consideration before any decision on its effectiveness can be made.
