Cork towns face pay-parking scheme

A pay parking system could be on the cards in some Cork towns this Summer. It comes as new municipal districts are scheduled to replace town councils in June. It was revealed yesterday that councillors elected to the municipal districts in the forthcoming local elections will have the powers to decide on pay parking. Municipal districts could now get a percentage of pay parking profits to use for local improvement works. However, a number of councillors said they would never vote for the introduction of pay parking, especially in West Cork. Opposition to the move comes as the county council has approved planning for out-of-town stores which have free parking. There were calls at the meeting in County Hall yesterday for an end to pay parking in Mallow also. The system which introduced pay parking a number of years ago saw a large bulk of the profits used to subsidise ratepayers. Since plans are in place to provide equal rates countywide it is hoped that the pay parking system can be withdrawn as ratepayers will foot a larger bill.
