County Council Calls For Immediate Appointment Of Mediator in Boundary Debate

Cork County council have called for the immediate appointment of an independent mediator to resolve the contentious boundary issue.

Councillors have requested Minister for Local Government Eoghan Murphy appoint a mediator within the next seven days, or they would initiate legal proceedings to prevent the Minister from altering the boundary of the city and county councils.

The MacKinnon Implementation Group were due to put a report to cabinet by the end of September, however this has now been delayed by 6 months as the county council invoked a section of the Local Government act 1991 which put its views on the merger out to public consultation.

The Council say they have been forced to act in this manner as a result of the recent appointment by the Minister of the Chair of the Oversight Groupas a statutory officer.
