Draft air quality strategy for the city is open for consultation

The Council says the strategy will run up to 2026 and will involve the development of a high-quality air monitoring system and other initiatives to lower the levels of pollutants.

Smokey coal is banned in the city however pollution is still created by burning smokeless solid fuels and fossil fuels such as petrol and diesel.

The EPA says air pollution is responsible for the deaths of around 1,300 people in Ireland every year and the World Health Organisation has described it as the single biggest environmental health risk.

The closing date for submissions on the plan is March 31st.
