Education Minster defends school bus safety following Cork crash

The collision happened in Fermoy on Monday morning.

The Education Minister has moved to defend the safety of school buses in the wake of a bus crash in North Cork.

The incident happened shortly after 8 o'clock on Monday morning when a bus carrying over 50 Fermoy students overturned at Cregg South just outside Ballyhooly.

Four were hospitalised with minor injuries after the crash and a number of students were treated for shock and bruising aferwards.

Bus Éireann yesterday insisted private bus operators who provide school transport must meet certain criteria and as well as undergoing vehicle inspections.

Meanwhile the Irish Examiner today reports the registered 1999 bus had passed its safety tests, as well as having all the necessary paper work including insurance and NCT.

The bus involved in the crash is operated by Glenferry Coaches, which is owned by Kearney's coaches, and speaking on the Neil Prendeville Show owner of the company Roy Kearney says all buses are subject to several types of inspections and this bus was no different.
