That's the message from the Director of Fermoy River Youth Club who says the weir is on the brink of collapse

Funding is needed now, not in ten years time if the Fermoy Weir is to be saved. 

That's the message from the Director of Fermoy River Youth Club who says the weir is on the brink of collapse with migrating salmon set to be the worst affected.

Local sporting organisations including the rowing and angling clubs are also facing an uncertain future as water levels drop. 

In a statement issued to RedFM News Cork County Council say it will be necessary to seek funding to establish a programme for  restoration work, as there is currently no government funding programme to address the issues. 

And RedFM News has learned that some county councillors are to seek a meeting with Minister Seán Kyne in a bid to discuss the urgent need for funding. 

Speaking to RedFM News  Director of Fermoy River Youth Club Chris O'Donovan says he fears that by the time funding is secured it will be too late, and the long term cost of losing the Weir will outweigh the cost of repairing it:
