Government expected to give go-ahead for directly elected mayors in Cork and Dublin
The Irish Times reports a memorandum on the proposal will be brought before Cabinet next week.
It's after a report from the Department of Local Government suggested the lack of a mayor with executive powers in both cities has left them at a disadvantage compared to European cities of similar size.
