Highway6 receive backing of City Council

Six workers who have staged a sit-in at the Highway Retail run petrol station in Ballyvolane have received the backing of the City Council. Last night a motion to support the stance taken by workers following the sudden closure of the filling station was passed unanimously. It's also hoped some clarity will be gained for workers when mediation talks take place in Dublin this afternoon. Sinn Féin TD Jonathan O'Brien will represent the Highway6 employees at the meeting which will also be attended by one of the directors of Highway Retail. The plight of the workers is also expected to put the spotlight on protective legislation for workers when the Texaco branded garage is also due to be raised in the Dáil today. It's week two of the sit-in and the staff have vowed to continue their campaign until they receive redundancy they say they're entitled to. Over the weekend an email was sent to employees who have now become known as the Highway6 advising them that a new company was taking over and as a result redundancy would not be applicable. AUDIO: Speaking to RedFM News store manager Deirdre Cregan says they received their P45s and so they feel they're entitled to redundancy. Click the PLAY button above to hear.
