Investigation underway at UCC into allegations of sexual harassment

Figures released under freedom of information show three allegations of sexual harassment were made by staff last year.

UCC did not reveal whether the allegations were made against the same individual and declined to comment further on the nature of the allegations to the Sunday Times but confirmed that investigations were commencing.

According to a report in the Sunday Times records show several allegations of sexual harassment have been made at universities across the country.

These allegations range from lewd insults, displaying pornographic content, unwanted physical contact of a sexual nature and demands for sexual favours.

Colleges across the country have an informal process to deal with allegations of sexual harassment before a formal investigation is carried out.

In 2010, UCC imposed a two year period of monitoring a male lecturer accused of inappropriate behaviour by a female colleague.

The case was later brought by UCC before the High Court which was described by the judge as at the lower end of the scale.
