Investigation underway into death of a pensioner following a house fire in North Cork
The 80 year old died in a house blaze in Buttevant yesterday evening
The fire broke out at a house at Knockbarry in Buttevant at around 8.30pm claiming the life of John Joseph Mulvey.
Gardai on checkpoint duty in the area were at the scene within minutes and got a ladder to the upstairs bedroom window but were unable to get Mr.Mulvey out who was trapped in his room.
Mallow Fire Brigade arrived at the scene and got the blaze under control. They recovered Mr Mulvey who was pronounced dead the scene by a local doctor.
Mr Mulvey's 48 year old nephew who was present at the time was taken to Cork University Hospital where he is being treated for a number of broken bones.
The scene has been cordoned off and a technical examination is being carried out at the scene in a bid to establish the cause of the blaze.
The body of Mr Mulvey has been been taken to Cork University Hospital for a post-mortem to be carried out.
