Its hoped introducing PE as a leaving cert subject can tackle childhood obesity
The Education Minister is hopeful the move will reduce obesity in children.
Schools will be offered the option of taking up the subject on a phased basis from next September.
There will be a sports performance assessment, PE project and written exam as part of the leaving cert course.
Education Minister Richard Bruton hopes it will encourage more lifelong healthy living.
