The 21-year-old is the first ever African Irish woman to be crowned Rose of Tralee
It's claimed a verbal attack on the new Rose of Tralee proves the need for hate crime legislation in Ireland.
21 year old Kirsten Mate Maher was racially abused while queuing in a chipper on a night out in Kilkenny at the weekend.
She's the first Irish African winner of the competition and has said she's regularly asked if she's "actually" Irish.
