Ryanair won't reopen it's base at Cork Airport until winter at the earliest

The budget airline has described the airport's plan to resurface the main runway as 'crazy'.

Ryanair flights will continue to fly to and from the airport during the summer but only with aircraft based at other airports.

A spokesperson for Ryanair says they deeply regret the closure of the base last year and have branded the government's international travel restrictions as 'failed'.

Speaking to RedFM News in the past few minutes, Communications Manager at Cork Airport Kevin Cullinane says Ryanair knew the airport had plans to resurface the runway:

"Well, disappointed with that statement because we're progressing long term capital infrastructure programmes at the moment, given the fact that aviation at Cork airport is down 99% so we're fast tracking essential works now while demand is extremely low. We were the fastest growing airport coming into the pandemic last year. What we're trying to do now is upgrade the facility, so that the main runway can be done this year, which will be an asset for the region for the next 20 years."
