Sexual Abuse Campaigner To Become First Cork Woman To Receive Spirit Of Mother Jones Award

The award has been presented to people in the past who've acted with the spirit of Shandon-born, Mother Jones

A sexual abuse campaigner is set to become the first Cork woman to be presented with the Spirit of Mother Jones Award this hour.

Mother of two, Louise O'Keeffe fought a 15 year long battle to get civil redress for the sexual abuse she suffered at Dundurrow Primary School in Kinsale in the 1970s.

The Award has been presented to people in the past who are deemed to act in the spirit of Shandon-born US labour rights organiser, Mary Harris, who has become known across the globe as Mother Jones.

A spokesperson for the Cork Mother Jones Committee has called Louise O'Keeffe an extraordinary woman who was determined to ensure justice for herself and the hundreds of people who've had a similiar experience in the schools of Ireland.

Speaking to RedFM News in the lead up to the presentation, Louise says its feels surreal to receive an award with such significance:
