Tenants living in rent pressure zones could be facing a price increase of 8%  from the 13th of July

There are now calls on the government to re-impose a full freeze on rents

Tenants living in rent pressure zones could be facing a price increase of 8%  from the 13th of July.

The government introduced a rent freeze last year due to the pandemic, but it's due to lift in July, meaning landlords can increase the rent for this year and last year.

There are now calls on the government to re-impose a full freeze on rents and a complete ban on evictions until the end of the pandemic.

Speaking to RedFM News Cork Solidarity TD Mick Barry says rents in the city are already averaging around €1200 a month

"This loophole which allows rent increases of this kind, must be closed and it must be closed quickly better again, let's reintroduce the national rent freeze, and try and stop rents from rising at all I mean, they're already at record levels"
