The Health and Safety Authority is to issue a safety alert about the opening of empty oil drums after the death of an apprentice in a workplace explosion in Youghal nearly two years ago.
21 year old Donal Scanlon of Clashmore, Co Waterford was working at B&C Services at the Foxhold Industrial Estate in Youghal when he sustained fatal head injuries in the blast in November 2015
He was using a plasma torch to cut the lid off an empty, 45-gallon oil drum when the explosion happened.
At his inquest yesterday a verdict of death due to an occupational accident was returned.
The jury advised the HSA to issue an immediate safety alert about the procedure and this morning, the HSA has confirmed to RedFM News that the alert will be issued next week
