BREAKING: Taoiseach has made contact with the the HSE about Mallow General Hospital

Fears had been raised about the closure of the medical assessment unit at the hospital

Concern had been raised about the closure of the medical assessment unit at the hospital with the INMO warning that it would put patients at risk
The union says staff were told the unit would close for at least four weeks

It's now emerged that the Taoiseach Micheal Martin has spoken to the HSE about the situation at the hospital and a positive update regarding the situation is expected later as every effort is being made to prevent a reduction of services at the facility

Fianna Fail TD James O’Connor had raised the potential of staff shortages at Mallow General Hospital with the Minister for Health as an urgent matter that would have a significant impact on hospital capacity in the Cork area.

“We understand that there will be a positive update regarding the situation at Mallow General Hospital today and every effort is being made to prevent a reduction of services at the facility” said Deputy O’Connor.

Deputy O’Connor has serious concerns about any proposal to reduce staff at Mallow General Hospital. Any reduction in staffing would cause many patients to divert to CUH and other Cork hospitals that already face significant overcrowding and are over 40km away.
