BREAKING: The Duke of Edinburgh Prince Philip has died at the age of 99
Buckingham Palace has announced that The Duke of Edinburgh, Prince Philip, has died at the age of 99.
The Duke had been married to Queen Elizabeth II for over 70 years.
A tweet confirming the news read "It is with deep sorrow that Her Majesty The Queen has announced the death of her beloved husband, His Royal Highness The Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh. His Royal Highness passed away peacefully this morning at Windsor Castle."
Prince Philip recently had a heart procedure for a "pre existing condition" and an infection before being discharged after spending a month in hospital.
After carrying out almost 20,000 public engagements, it was in May 2017 when the 96 year old Duke retired from royal duties but still supported the Queen at larger events.
No details about The Duke of Edinburgh's funeral have been released, however it is understood that due to his wishes he will be given a royal ceremonial funeral rather than a state funeral.
The Queen will sign off on his funeral plans in the coming days.
