BREAKING: Threat Of Temporary Closure Of The Medical Assessment Unit At Mallow General Hospital Lifted

The Irish Nurses and Midwives Organisation have confirmed to RedFM News that the HSE has made direct contact with the union and confirmed that the unit is not to close

The confirmation comes as the Taoiseach is meeting with representatives from the HSE at Government buildings this evening to discuss the matter

Staff at the hospital had been told that the Medical Assessment Unit was to close for at least four weeks - a move which the INMO said would have put patients at risk

This evening Gerry O'Dwyer, the CEO of the South/South West Hospital Group confirmed that services will continue as normal at the Medical Assessment Unit and the Local Injury Unit at Mallow General Hospital.

Speaking to RedFM News in the past few minutes the INMO's Liam Conway has welcomed the news

"The INMO have been representing our members since Wednesday night, as the news broke abruptly that the Medical Assessment Unit would be closed. However, I would like to confirm that the HSE has written to the INMO advising that the unit will remain open next week. That will come as  welcome news to, obviously, the staff at Mallow General Hospital, but also the patients and service users of the Medical Assessment Unit"
