Concerns are mounting about the lack of school places in East Cork

St Mary's High School Midleton is currently managing a waiting list of 70 pupils

The principal of St Mary's High School in Midleton says they're exploring the possibility of moving the school to a new green field site that can accommodate the demand being experienced.

The school which has 750 pupils is currently managing a waiting list of around 70 pupils, 46 of which have not applied to any other secondary school in September.

Speaking to RedFM News principal Donnchadh O'Briain says while a short-term solution needs to be found, the problem is a long-term one and the bottom line is they need more space:

" Our long term vision really is to have a new school on a  greenfield site. Our Board of Management have met, and their view is that to actually plan for the future, we should have a building that can accommodate all those who want to come to St Mary's High School. So we've done some scoping around that, we have lodged an application with the Department of Education, and we're really waiting to see what the next move on their part would be"
