Distress call off Cork declared a hoax

Two helicopters, three coastguard units, three lifeboats and the navy were mobilised yesterday


An investigation is underway after a distress call off the coast of Cork was deemed a hoax.

A major search operation was launched yesterday morning after a crew-member from the 'blue bird' called the Valencia Coastguard to say they were in danger of sinking near Cork Harbour. 

Two helicopters, three coastguard units, three lifeboats and the navy were all called in to take part in the search.

Gerard O'Flynn is Coastguard Operations Manager he says an invesigation into the hoax call is now underway.
