A leading emergency consultant is calling for a major-trauma centre to be set up Leeside

At a Trauma Care Conference  today, experts from Australia and the UK will share their experiences of setting up major trauma networks in their countries.

Despite Cork University Hospital dealing with serious cases on  a daily basis, it has yet to reach the requirements to become an official trauma centre.

To reach the suitable standards, the health facility would need a helipad, a CT scanner in the emergency department and additional bed capacity in the intensive care unit.

Dr Fran O'Keeffe is from the Mater Hospital that also has the potential to be advanced. 

He says dedicated centres should be developed both in Cork and Dublin to service people right across the country:
