Naval Service Figures At Their Lowest Level In Almost A Decade

Just last week RedFM News revealed that since the start of the year at least 60 personnel have left the navy
A further 12 due to leave in the coming weeks - the majority of those are leaving to take up better paid positions in the private sector.
Now Fianna Fail's Michael McGrath has accused the Government of ignoring the plight of the country's Defence Forces and failing to listen or address the serious issues facing them which is now led to a crisis in retention. Only 989 personnel are currently in the Naval Service.
In recent years the wives and partners of defence forces members set up a support group and highlighted how troops and Naval personnel are struggling to pay their mortgages and basic necessities because their pay levels are so low.
Shelly Cotter of the WPDF group told RedFM News that she's not surprised that so many members are choosing to leave their military careers:
