OPW minister appeals for group opposed to Blackpool flood relief scheme to reconsider their position

Minister Patrick O'Donovan says around 300 homes and businesses will be protected by the proposed €20m project.

The OPW say the scheme has been designed by a team of local, national and international experts and includes measures to protect local wildlife such as otters.

Responding to the minister's statement the Save Our Bride Otters group say the minister should read the findings of an OPW report that said the scheme would cause a permanent and significant negative impact to otters and fisheries on the River Bride.

Speaking to RedFM News, minister Patrick O'Donovan says the alternatives being put forward by objectors have already been considered:

"Well, I suppose my appeal first and foremost, to think of the residents of Blackpool, who are like residents in in towns and villages across the country who live nearby areas that are threatened by flooding is to think of people who are who are living under the constant fear of flooding, we have a flood relief scheme here that's designed to the highest national and international standards from an environmental point of view."
