Packages removed from body of man on flight diverted to Cork

The 24-year-old Brazilian was named last night as John Kennedy Santos Gurjo.

Gardaí are awaiting the results of forensic and toxicology tests following a post mortem on the body of a man who died on board an Aer Lingus flight from Lisbon to Dublin, which was diverted to Cork on Sunday.

The 24-year-old Brazilian was named last night as John Kennedy Santos Gurjo.

It's understood the man became agitated approximately an hour into the flight and started climbing over seats that passengers were sitting on as well as jumping on tea and coffee trollies.

One person was bitten during the ordeal as passengers and staff attempted to restrain him.

The captain declared a medical emergency as two nurses and a doctor on board the flight failed in their attempts to keep him alive.

Tests are now being conducted on a number of packages recovered from the 24-year-old's body during the post mortem at Cork University Hospital.

Gardai are investigating the possibility the Brazillian man was being used as a drugs mule.

Another passenger - a woman in her forties - is being detained in relation to drugs offences and was last night being questioned at Togher Garda Station, after an unknown substance was found in her luggage.
