Plans for apartments at Bessborough rejected

Plans for apartments on the site of the Mother and Baby home in Bessborough have been rejected by An Bord Pleanala.
The 179 unit developement was on privately owned land on the site at Bessborough and overlaps on an area marked as a burial ground.
The board say there's reasonable concerns that the site does contain remains, and believes it would be premature to allow the development to proceed.
Peter Horgan, Labour Local Area Rep for Cork, who made a submission to the Oral Hearing told RedFM News it is a significant decision:
"Today's decision is a moral and historical victory for the survivors and their relatives of Bessborough Mother and Baby Home.
"What the board has said, and it's quite significant given that it was a statutory process that an Bord Pleanala engaged with on the oral hearing, it was not satisfied that the site was not previously used as a children's burial ground, which was part of the key investigations as part of the oral hearings in April."
