Jim Carrey To Face Trial Over Death Of Irish Ex-Girlfriend

Jim Carrey is set to stand trial following the death of his Tipperary born ex-girlfriend.

The actor is being accused of supplying the drugs which killed 30-year-old Cathriona White by her mother Brigid Sweetman and her ex-husband Mark Burton.

White, from Cappawhite, Co. Tipperary was found dead on September 28, 2015, four days after an overdose at her home at Sherman Oaks, Los Angeles. The death occurred just days after Carrey broke up with her.

The claims state that the 55-year-old actor provided the make-up artist with Ambien, Propranolol and Percocet, the drugs which she used in an overdose. The bottles for the prescription drugs were found at Cathriona's house under the name Arthur King, which is allegedly a pseudonym Carrey uses.

A motion to dismiss the case has been filed by Carrey's lawyer, Raymond Boucher. Carrey is denying all allegations and his lawyers have described the accusations as “malicious” and “predatory”. He also remarked in court following a hearing, "Mr Carrey loved Ms White dearly and so obviously it will be a very painful process for him." Mr Boucher said that the wrongful death claims are too vague and that under drugs legislation were likely to fall outside the statute of limitations.

Carrey's trial date has been set for April 26 2018.

Judge Hill said she would send her final ruling on Carrey's motion to dismiss to lawyers in due course but indicated she would side with the prosecution at least in part.
