Live At The Marquee - A Chancer's Guide to Kodaline
Kodaline play Live At The Marquee tonight.
Kodaline are a four piece band from Co. Dublin. The band consists of lead singer Steve Garrigan, lead guitarist and back up vocalist, Mark Prendergast, bassist Jason Boland and drummer Vinny May.
Steve and Mark grew up together in Swords, attending the same school and becoming childhood friends. The pair would participate in many battle of the bands competitions in school and as time passed they shared a passion for the same music and decided to form a band with friend Vinny. Conor Linnane was an original member of the group before Jason Boland when the four-piece appeared on the fifth season of RTE's You're A Star competition in 2006 as 21 Demands. The band gained recognition in Ireland from their time on the show and even managed to become the first independent band to reach number one in the Irish charts through digital download as a result of their song "Give Me A Minute" being released as part of the show. The band finished as runners up in competition.
The band stuck together following the competition, playing small gigs around the country and continued to write songs. Conor Linnane would eventually leave the band and would be replaced by Jason Boland on bass.
The band decided a new name was in order following the departure of Linnane and subsequently, Kodaline was chosen as their new title.
In 2012 the band released an extended play called The Kodaline EP. A song on this EP called "All I Want" catapulted the band to household names with Fearne Cotton choosing it as her Record of The Week on BBC Radio 1. The song went on to feature on Grey's Anatomy and was even picked as the background music for Google's international Year in Review Video for 2012.
It was 2013 by the time the band released their first studio album "In A Perfect World". As well as "All I Want", the band had great success with other singles such as "High Hopes", "Love Like This" and "Pray". A deluxe version of the album contains covers of Disclosure's "Latch" which the band performed on BBC's Live Lounge. After the release of the album, "All I Want" was used on several TV shows including MTV's Catfish and The Vampire Diaries and more recently was used on the soundtrack for the worldwide box office hit, The Fault In Our Stars. The album track "Perfect World" is used in the opening and closing credits for Channel 4's Gogglebox.
In 2015 the band released their second studio album "Coming Up For Air" with a louder, more electronic sound. The album contains singles such as "Honest", "The One" and their newest release, "Ready".
This is Kodaline's first performance at Live At The Marquee. The band have previously played in Cork on Arthur's Day in The Crane Lane. Support comes from Mullingar's The Academic.
