Moonlight Wins Oscar For Best Picture AFTER La La Land Initially Announced As Winner
A mix up at The Oscars last night saw La La Land producers realise mid-speech that they actually hadn't actually won Best Picture.
It's the biggest award of the night. Best Picture encompasses all aspects of the best movie of the last 12 months including the acting, screenplay, directing, cinematography and all the rest it takes to create a great film.
In a shocking moment in last night's ceremony, La La Land was announced as winner of Best Picture when actually Moonlight had won.
Here's what happened:
The award was being presented by Warren Beatty and Faye Dunaway. The nominees were listed, Beatty opened the envelope and looked at the card with the winner and paused for an extended period of time before looking around, looking at his co-presenter Dunaway who announced La La Land had won.
Producers from La La Land joyfully ran to the stage and began their acceptance speeches. However soon into their thank yous, producer Jordan Horowitz spotted the error on the winner's card. He interrupted the speeches and turned the card to the camera to show that Moonlight was the actual winner.
The crew from Moonlight began to make their way to the stage and award presenter Warren Beatty stepped back up to the mic. He explained why it took him so long to announce the winner after looking at the card. He said the card he was holding had said that Emma Stone who stars in La La Land had won and after showing it to his co-presenter, she announced that the winner was La La Land.
Beatty later told The Times, "I looked down at the card and thought, this is very strange, because it says best actress. Maybe there was a misprint. I don't know what happened. And that's all I have I have to say on the subject."
