Open Air Gig to Launch the Guinness Cork Jazz Festival 2016

Get your jazz hats and dancing shoes ready as the countdown is on for the Guinness Cork Jazz Festival taking place across the city from 28th – 31st October, 2016.

The festival is set to be bigger and better in its 34th year, for the first year ever the festival will kick-off with an exciting Open Air Gig at the Cork Opera House Plaza on Friday evening.

The gig will be free of charge and include performances from a number of highly anticipated acts, some of which have already sold out gigs during the festival weekend. Acts will be announced in the coming weeks, keep an eye on the Guinness Cork Jazz Festival social channels for more.

Commenting on the addition to the festival line-up, Gemma Bell, Guinness Cork Jazz Manager, said, “This year we want to kick the festival off in style with our first ever Open Air Gig that promises to bring lots of excitement and a brilliant atmosphere to the streets of Cork. We are also keen to use this opportunity to give back to the people of Cork who have supported the festival throughout the years and continue to do so.”

Over 40,000 people are expected to descend on Cork City for the October bank holiday weekend to enjoy the popular Jazz festival. This year, the festival programme includes a wide and varied schedule of activity with 1,000 musicians, from over 20 countries, an extensive fringe programme and live music trails. Jazz sensations headlining at the festival include Grammy Award winner, Robert Glasper, top American jazz vibist, Jason Marsalis, Sheryl Bailey, Justin Kauflin, Jacob Collier, The Hot Club of Cowtown and Kurt Rosenwinkel.

In addition to the jazzy line up, the Irish pop rock band Picture This will play to a sold out audience at Cork Opera House, followed by an array of top attractions including Mexican superstars Rodrigo y Gabriela, hit makers BellX1, Cork soul sensation Brian Deady, and folk legend Loudon Wainwright III.
