Pick of the Week: HousePlants - ‘Companero' - Green on Red

Hey, it’s Conor from Green On Red!

My ‘Pick of the Week’ comes from new band HousePlants, with their dazzling second single ‘Companero’.

HousePlants is a new project dreamed up by multi-instrumentalist and producer Daithí and Bell X1 frontman, Paul Noonan. While the duo had previously collaborated together - the idea of forming a band came about during lockdown.

Paul says: “Having made ‘Take The Wheel’ together for Daithí’s most recent record, I sent him a song last summer by way of a ‘Howaya?’, really, but also for his banger sensibilities!”. We began trading ideas, with the idea that whatever we were doing was not ‘Take The Wheel’, that we go the other way and make music that was visceral, and a release of sorts."

The duo released ‘What’s with all the pine’ as their debut single and have followed it up with ‘Companero’ – a track that fizzes with electronic hooks juxtaposed by Noonan’s delivery and clever lyric writing.

"Companero was born as a collective remembering of the marriage equality referendum in Ireland, and the euphoria of the day when people gathered at Dublin Castle to celebrate that milestone in our journey towards becoming a more open, liberal society. It’s also a banger!... fast and frenetic, with Daithí adding the snarling synth to my singing and drumming… and was the first HousePlants song that we worked on from our respective caves during lockdown, lobbing our parts across the ether." - Paul Noonan.

Hear HousePlants ‘Companero’ and three hours of the best Irish music with Conor this Sunday on Green on Red from 7pm.
