1,349 people under 65 are living in nursing homes, according to the HSE's latest figures

146 of those people were living in nursing homes across Cork last year
This costs the state nearly 62 million euro last year - or an average of almost 900 euro for each resident every week.
The HSE says young adults with disabilities are only accommodated in nursing homes where there are no alternatives.
Minister of State for Disabilities, Anne Rabbitte, says the new figures are very worrying.
"It's very concerning, you have to ask the question is, how come we cannot support the person themselves in their own independent living space, or why can't we support them within the community, and also the will and preference of that person, who has the disability is that being addressed is being listened to, or is it being actioned?"
