1916 centenary plans Leeside defended
The cost of running the events will be over three quarters of a million euro.
The cost of the 1916 commemorations has been defended Leeside.
It comes after RedFM News learned last week that over three quarters of a million euro is being spent on the programme of events this year in the city and county.
Over 300 events will run throughout 2016 as part of a seven strand plan with a focus on historical reflection, the Irish language and cultural expression.
Conor Nelligan of Cork County Council says the funding is important as the event will put Cork on the historical map, benefit the tourism industry and if they weren't supporting it people would be 'up in arms'.
However there has been some criticism about the funding being pumped into the commemorations with Cork Penney Dinners representative pleading with the government to divert some of the funds towards helping the homeless.
Speaking to RedFM News Catriona Twomey says it would be more of a fitting tribute to the leaders of the past.
