20% Of Motoring Offences Go Unpunished

Around one in every five motoring offences results in no punishment, an official report has found. The annual report of the Comptroller and Auditor General finds that weaknesses in the Fixed Charge Notice System mean a fifth of drivers avoid fines and a court appearance. In 11% of cases a Garda summons was never sent asking the motorist to go to court, while in some cases penalty points could not be issued because the car was owned by a company. In 2% of cases, the tickets issued by Gardaí were spoilt and did not contain all of the information necessary to secure a prosecution.
