21 year old who broke into a house in Ballyvolane with an axe jailed for three years

Michael Martin from Mount Brosna in Mayfield pleaded guilty to aggravated burglary at the house in Meadow Park on October 24th last year.

Gardaí rushed to the scene after a woman reported that a man had broken into her house at 1:43am.

Cork Circuit Criminal Court heard today that the 58 year old woman and her adult son had locked themselves in an upstairs bedroom for safety.

Michael Martin attempted to enter the room, forcing the woman and her son to try to hold the door shut.

Gardaí arrived at the scene and discovered Martin inside armed with an axe.

The court was told that he attempted to flee from Garda custody while taking a smoke break outside Mayfield Garda Station however he was caught a short distance away.

His barrister said he thought the house was unoccupied and said he was very sorry for the incident.

He admitted to being on cocaine on the night and had been traumatised following a death in his family.

Judge Seán O'Donnabháin jailed Martin for three years to be served consecutively with a two year sentence previously handed down for a separate offence.
