24-year-old remanded in custody after he admitted robbing filling station shop
Jamie Quilligan from Chestnut Close, Nutley Avenue in Mahon pleaded guilty today at Cork Circuit Criminal Court to robbery of €705 at the Circle K Garage on Blackrock Road on November 17th last
The court heard that Mr Quilligan went into the filling station shop with a mask on his face and armed with a machete which he slammed down on to the counter as he demanded cash.
The staff member handed over the till tray but the 24-year-old's mask slipped and staff were able to give gardai a description and he was caught a short distance away after changing his clothing.
Gardai recovered the cash but were unable to find the machete.
The court also heard that Mr Quilligan had no previous convictions but he had a drug addiction and he told gardai that he held up the filling station shop to get money to pay off a drugs debt.
His defence barrister, Nikki O’Sullivan said that Quilligan had gone to a treatment centre in Tipperary and was also attending addiction treatment in Cork.
Judge O Donnabhain said it was a very serious offence and he remanded Quilligan in custody to Cork Prison and said he wanted a report from an addiction councillor on Quilligan’s progress and he adjourned the matter until May 17th.
