38% of Leaving Cert students opt to take an accredited grade in Irish

Changes to the teaching of Irish is needed in schools, according to Conradh na Gaeilge.

It's after 38% of Leaving Cert students opted to take an accredited grade in Irish this year, 11% more than in any other subject.

87% of students will be given an accredited grade while also sitting written exams this year.

Julian De Spainn from Conradh na Gaeilge says there should be more focus on understanding the language from primary school all the way to third level:

"It's something that's used across Europe and when you're teaching languages that you should do skills based, so you start off and the focus will be on speaking the language, understanding the language obviously at the start, and then you gradually move on to the other skills as well"
