48 people were waiting for a bed at two Cork hospitals today

The latest figures show Cork University Hospital was the second most overcrowded hospital in the country with 44 people waiting for a bed.

The latest Trolley Watch figures from the Irish Nurses and Midwives Organisation show that all 44 patients at CUH were waiting for a bed on trolleys in the emergency department.

Last Friday the INMO called on the HSE to convene an emergency meeting of its ED taskforce to tackle what it described as "unsafe levels" of hospital overcrowding.

The nursing union also called an emergency meeting of its own ED nurses section to agree the health and safety measures needed to protect staff and patients from what the INMO is describing as "hazardous conditions".

The ED at CUH is consistently one of the most overcrowded in the country and people with non-urgent needs are being asked to consider all available options before presenting at the hospital.

Nationally there were 307 patients waiting for a bed this morning.

There was 4 people without a bed at the Mercy this morning, while University Hospital Limerick was the most over crowded with 51 patients without a bed.
