A 4 Year-Old Boy Who Was Pricked By A Discarded Syringe Is Facing A 6 Month Wait To Find Out If He Has Been Infected

Dereck Kavanagh sat on the used heroin needle
He was exposed to the heroin syringe when sitting on the grass as he played with friends in Araglen Court, Togher.
Dereck was rushed to Cork University Hospital where he was tested and given injections to tackle infections such as hepatitis.
However he will have to return in 6 months to be tested again to establish if he picked up any infections from the syringe.
Speaking on the Neil Prendeville Show on Cork's RedFM yestrday, Dereck's mother Danielle Austin says her son initially thought he had sat on glass:
