A Cork GP says patients waiting on referrals for cancer services should not panic

The reassurance comes despite the fallout from the HSE cyberattack on services at Cork University Hospital
Dr John Sheehan says while GP referrals cannot be made electronically, urgent referrals are still being faxed through to the hospitals
He says patients who are deemed urgent cases have no reason to panic and equally those who are not considered to be urgent will continue to be referred to the hospitals as normal when systems are back up and running
Speaking to RedFM News Dr John Sheehan says the bigger concern among GP's is that services have already been impacted by Covid-19 and could now be further affected by the cyberattack which could lead to delays
"Because for instance we had a big backload f cervical screening tests, and the cervical screening programme was trying to deal with this big backlog, and now on top of this, we've had to postpone screening again. So that leads to a further backlog and that's just one example of many programmes that can be further delayed. If all these programmes get backed up are we going to start falling behind and I find it very difficult to catch up"
