A Fine Gael Senator Says He Fears Checking Twitter Due To Abuse

A Fine Gael Senator has told Twitter that he gets "pangs of fear" when he receives a notification, due to the level of abuse on the platform.

The social media company was before an Oireachtas Committee and was asked why it continued to allow anonymous accounts to operate.

Twitter explained that it's vital it allows anonymous accounts, as there are parts of the world where users are persecuted for sharing their views.

Senator John McGahon told the company that he didn't accept their reasoning.

"I think that's total and utter BS I think it's a nice fluffy answer instead what I've been on it was the kinds are doing is they are dishing out some of the most horrific on a horrendous abuse on their platform. Every time I pick up my phone and I see Twitter notifications I get pangs of fright and fear of God, what is it next. And it's gotten to the stage now where I think it's really beginning to undermine the level of our democracy."
