A minute's silence has been held at a meeting of Cork City Council this evening following publication of report into Mother and Baby Homes

A minute's silence has been held at a meeting of Cork City Council this evening in acknowledgement of all those who have been impacted by Mother and Baby Homes.

It follows the publication of a five year investigation into the homes in recent weeks which found an "appalling" level of infant mortality among children born in the facilities, including Bessborough here in Cork.

In a statement read out this evening on behalf of party whips, Lord Mayor Cllr Joe Kavangh said the Council wishes to acknowledge the publication of the report and the apology on behalf of the state by Taoiseach Micheal Martin and Cork City Council's association with same.

The Lord Mayor also said the local authority was fully committed to playing its part in delivering on the Government's action plan following the report with local actions such as memorializations

A working group compromised of party whips and party leaders to deal with all such matters arising from the investigation in mother and baby homes is also being established.
