A quarter of people aged over 54 spend about 23 hours a week helping their elderly parents

According to a nationwide study elderly parents are helped by their children with things like eating, dressing and bathing

The latest data from the Irish Longitudinal Study on Ageing shows they also spend a further 13 hours a week on practical chores like shopping and transportation.

The study has been presented to the Citizens' Assembly, which votes today on recommendations for the government to tackle the challenges that come with ageing.

Research Director Christine McGarrigle says more half of middle-aged people are also helping their parents - and their children -  financially.
