A woman is safe after being rescued off the West Cork coast after she was trapped in a sinkhole

The Coastguard and the RNLI helped in the rescue.

The alarm was raised when the woman got trapped in a sea inlet just off the slipway of Dunworley beach near Butlerstown just after 5 o'clock yesterday evening.

A local walker heard her shouts for help when she got caught in the swelling tide and immediately called the rescue services.

Courtmacsherry RNLI and the Coastguard 115 helicopter from Shannon were sent to the scene.

The Old Head/ Seven Heads Coastguard crew also went to her aid from land and two of them climbed down the sink hole to get to the casualty.

They managed to bring her up the cliff- face to safety to a HSE ambulance.

Water safety advice from the RNLI

We would stress to all those that are partaking in any water activities or planning a visit to the coast over the next month, to remember and follow RNLI safety advice below along with all new Government regulations and to stay safe in these different times for all Rescue Services.

Have a plan - check the weather forecast, tide times and read local hazard signage.

Keep a close eye on your family – on the beach, on the shoreline and in the water.

Don’t allow your family to swim alone.

Don’t use inflatables at all, at all on the sea.

Make sure to wear a Lifejacket at all times when taking to the sea in a boat.

If you fall into the water unexpectedly, FLOAT TO LIVE. Fight your instinct to thrash around, lean back, extend your arms and legs, and Float.

In an emergency dial 999 or 112 immediately, and ask for the Coast Guard. The Rescue Services are there to help you all.
