Abuse Survivor Says State Is Letting Down Victims

A Cork abuse survivor says the state is letting down victims of sexual abuse across the country with restrictive interpretation of the judgement in her landmark case.

In the case taken by Louise O'Keeffe  the European Court of Human Rights ruled that the state was liable for abuse she suffered at the hands of her teacher at Dunderrow School in the 1970's.

However the Irish Human Rights and Equality Commission wants the judgment in the case taken back to the court for clarification amid concerns that government has taken a too narrow interpretation of it by making other victims meet restrictive criteria.

It was believed that hundreds would benefit from the ruling however the Irish Examiner reports that  the State Claims Agency has only offered settlements to seven victims.
